In 2012 we were commissioned to undertake the design and installation of a micropile foundation solution for the North West electrification project.
There were three separate areas in Phase 01 where conventional piling solutions were unsuitable due to the proposed locations of the foundations and characteristics of the ground.
Our design and installation methodology allowed us to install the foundations during day shift while trains were running. Lightweight and powerful hydraulic rotary percussive drills, mounted on specially fabricated sled rigs, were used to install the micropiles. The lightweight drilling system gave us the versatility required to access the foundation locations and install micropiles through a thick peat layer and 3m into competent bedrock.
