As part of the structural strengthening of the River Irvine Viaduct, we installed over 50nr full-width (9m) spandrel wall ties. Coring works on historic structures like the River Irvine Viaduct always pose a significant challenge, as the material being cored is incredibly varied. A single hole may have to pass through extremely hard dolerite rock, loose granular fill material and ballast. The hole where formed for the wall ties using a 76mm-diameter mining barrel string system, with diamond tipped cutting heads.
